Firm Obtains $2 Million Settlement in Mille Lacs County Jail Strip Search Class Action Suit
Nov 1, 2005
Minneapolis, MN (November 1, 2005) – The Mille Lacs County District Court has given final approval to a settlement agreement between Mille Lacs County and a class of plaintiffs illegally strip searched at the Mille Lacs County Jail between May 19, 1998, and May 31, 2004. Under the terms of the settlement agreement, Mille Lacs County's insurer will pay its policy limits of $2 million. A final approval hearing of the proposed settlement was held on October 28; the Court had certified the Settlement Class on August 15, 2005.
“We are extremely pleased with the settlement, which vindicates the Constitutional rights of class members and is fair and reasonable to the class,” said Vincent J. Moccio, a partner at Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi L.L.P. and lead counsel for the plaintiff class, estimated to be approximately 1,200 members. Moccio previously achieved a $7 million settlement in a similar agreement on behalf of persons strip searched at the St. Croix County Jail in Wisconsin.
In order to claim a portion of the settlement, class members will be required to submit a claim form. Claim forms will be mailed in the next two weeks to class members. For more information about the settlement, class members can call 1-866-308-7608.
