The Minnesota Association for Justice has collected $3,585 for Walker's Market at the Sabathani Community Center in Minneapolis.

Minnesota Association for Justice President Chris Messerly got the idea to donate to Walker's Market when he saw its empty shelves earlier this summer when he was at the Community Center delivering bike helmets donated by his organization's members.

"Summer can be a challenging time for food shelves," Messerly said. "Few children who receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year have the same access to food when school is not in session. Our organization saw a need and decided we wanted to help stock the shelves."

Minnesota Association for Justice New Lawyer Section Co-Chair Genevieve Zimmerman stepped forward and coordinated the fundraising drive.

"Malnutrition affects children's ability to learn, their physical and emotional health, and their overall prospects for a decent life," Zimmerman said. "I'm thankful so many of our members were willing to donate to make this fundraising drive a success."

Messerly, Zimmerman, and Minnesota Association for Justice Executive Director Tim Adams visited the Sabathani Community Center to deliver the donation. Food Shelf Coordinator Trudy Fuller said the $3,585 donation will make a big difference to Walker's Market and help them to serve many families.

Sabathani Community Center was founded in 1966 as a small grassroots organization focused on serving youth in South Minneapolis. Within a short time, the organization was overwhelmed with requests for broader, more direct services, especially those addressing basic needs and necessities of life. Recognizing that meeting basic needs is a temporary solution, Sabathani developed empowerment programs that focus on skill development to help people to become self-directed and self-sufficient.
