Sep 25, 2008

Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi L.L.P. is a sponsor of Looting of the Iraq Museum: The Loss of a Nation's Memory, a lecture and panel discussion on the protection of cultural property during armed conflict.

Dr. Donny George, former Director General of the Iraq National Museum, was instrumental in the recovery of thousands of objects looted during the U.S. invasion in 2003.  He will focus his lecture on the looting of the Iraq Museum in April 2003 and the current state of the collections and archaeological sites in Iraq.  Dr. George's lecture will be followed by a panel discussion on war and cultural property.  The panel will be comprised of Dr. George; Dr. Patty Gerstenblith, an expert in cultural property law from DePaul University Law School; Cori Wegener, Associate Curator at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and President of the U.S. Committee of the Blue Shield; and Phyllis Messenger of the Maya Society of Minnesota (moderator).

The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place the evening of Wednesday, November 12 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at the Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota.  A reception will follow the panel discussion.
