  • Experience

    James Chin helps business and insurance industry clients manage and control the risks associated with complex litigation.  Mr. Chin's business litigation and insurance practices focus on complex contractual disputes as well as insurance coverage and subrogation matters.  Mr. Chin has a nuanced understanding of both the litigation process and the key business issues that drive litigation success. 

    Mr. Chin's record also establishes his skill at risk assessment and liability avoidance.  Both clients and industry groups have recognized his practice insights and he has become a frequent and popular educator and speaker, presenting to various industry groups as well as at numerous seminars created in-house at client request.

    A Georgia resident for over forty years, Mr. Chin believes in both professional and personal community service.  His commitments include ongoing professional education efforts and organization of an annual, rotating-recipient community service project in Atlanta during which firm attorneys, consultants and clients join together to volunteer on behalf of a meaningful cause.

    Mr. Chin formerly served as in-house counsel, Division of Student Affairs at the University of Georgia (1998-2001)

    Obtained summary judgment and sanctions award dismissing on the merits a $38 million business loss claim.  Case involved significant, contentious, discovery disputes involving complex, international and e-discovery issues.

    Defeated $11 million claim on summary judgment in case involving interpretation of contract covering builder's risk policy. Claim involved mold in a luxury condominium complex in south Florida. Affirmed by the U.S. Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

    Defeated $12 million claim on summary judgment in a dispute involving loss of hospital supplies in Tennessee. Trial court's decision affirmed on appeal.

    As lead counsel helped resolve a $6 million dispute involving damage to frozen food products in North Carolina.

    Lead counsel obtaining resolution of a $7 million dispute involving damage to building façade.

    Lead counsel representing panel of insurers that led to the successful resolution of a $30 million coal mining claim. 

    Recovered $1 million on behalf of a subrogation client in claim arising out of contractor's failure to properly deliver and install a loom at a textile plant in South Carolina.

    Recovered $6 million subrogation claim arising out of poultry processing plant roof collapse due to defective renovation.
